Rajasthan associates with itself the name of hand printing. Each region of the state
has its own distinct style of printing. Block printing done in most of the region varies in
design and color choice from one city to another. Beside block printing, some regions
follow quite a diiferent way of printing. This is the reverse prinitng.
Reverse or resist Printing is the method where the pattern required is made on the
fabric and then dye reppellent is applied where color is not required. Then fabric is
then immersed in the dye. After dying, the material attached to the fabric to resist the
dye is removed. The edges of the resist areas get a tonal effect which is very light
and soft. a paste is made up of different materials and it is used for the printing areas,
which are required to resist the dye.
Barmer from western Rajasthan produces prints that are known for their bold
geometric patterns, called 'AJRAKH'. Barmer, being part of the Thar Desert produces
dark shades in their designs. The people in the desert use to believe that dark
shades are cooler as they absorb sunrays. Now with time, Barmer prints have become
famous for their use of dark colors. In fact the prints from different areas of desert
seem to be quite similar. But still, as per the region specification, same motif can be
interpreted in different forms.
Design including square shape is most demanded and peculiar in itself. The resistant
used also has a effect on the designs and patterns. The wax when used as resistant
produces some very unusual patterns and very different shades. The barmer prints
are not used much for dress material but for furnishings. The bedsheets and
bedspreads from Barmer are very famous and have a great market demand in and
outside India. The use of cotton cloth as the base for dyeing makes these bedsheets
more special.
